Improving site speed is one of the most technically challenging SEO topics but the concept of how to improve website speed is pretty simple. It essentially can be boiled down to the following four topics.<\/p>\n

  1. Host the site on a good server (a good hosting company) = Good Time to First Byte (TTFB)<\/a><\/li>\n
  2. Make the site with a fewer number of files to decrease the number of requests between the browser and server<\/a><\/li>\n
  3. Make the file size smaller so they get downloaded faster<\/a><\/li>\n
  4. Optimize the Critical Rendering Path so the site starts rendering faster<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    In this blog post, I am going to cover some of the most commonly asked questions that I came across and some of my own questions about how to improve site speed. I know there are some technical terms that we need to cover so if you find something written on this post that is not explained well enough, please let me know by leaving a comment below.<\/p>\n

    Additionally, I am also going to share with you some tips on how easy (or challenging) it could be to implement what is needed to make a WordPress site faster.<\/p>\n

    But first, let’s talk about the reason why most people want to improve their site speed – ranking higher on Google.<\/p>\n

    How Much will Improving Site Speed Affect Google Ranking?<\/span><\/h2>\n

    According to this blog post<\/a> on the Google Webmaster Central Blog, Google started considering site speed as one of its ranking factors starting in July 2018. However, the post also says the following<\/p>\n

    The \u201cSpeed Update,\u201d as we\u2019re calling it, will only affect pages that deliver the slowest experience to users and will only affect a small percentage of queries…….<\/p>\n

    We encourage developers to think broadly about how\u00a0performance<\/a>\u00a0affects a user\u2019s experience of their page and to consider a variety of\u00a0user experience metrics<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    In other words, even though site speed is now a part of the Google algorithm, as long as your site is not too slow when compared to your competitors, your site still has a good chance to rank high. However, if your site is too slow and provides bad user experience, that in itself could cause your site to not rank high.<\/p>\n
